It does not hurt to submit your website to directories. Actually, there are many services on the Web that offer to make those submissions for a small fee. The directories to which your website will be submitted to will, most probably, be free directories. Few tips:
- Make sure to only go with reputable services. Many people will offer to submit your website to 1,000 or more directories for, let’s say $20. That doesn’t sound right. They will probably not live up to their representations.
- Make sure to choose your link title, keywords and site description carefully.
- Make sure that the people that you hire do not submit your website to DMOZ.org. You should submit your site to DMOZ yourself.
In terms of paid directories, you should only submit your site to the ones that have been established for a long time, are reputable, charge a one-time fee and limit their listings to credible sites (i.e. screen the sites before admitting them – you don’t want your site to be listed alongside spammy sites).
